How long have you been a member of MAND?

SINCE BEGINNING PRACTICE AS AN RD IN MEMPHIS IN 1976

Why did you join MAND?

TO MEET OTHER DIETITIANS AND MAKE CONNECTIONS IN THE FIELD; I ALSO THOUGHT THAT WAS EXPECTED AS A DIETITIAN.

How has membership in MAND been of value to you and your practice?

I HAVE HAD SO MANY OPPORTUNITIES TO SERVE OUR COMMUNITY AS A NUTRITION PROFESSIONAL; ALSO HAVE TRULY ENJOYED THE NETWORKING AND GAINING FRIENDSHIPS.

Tell us about yourself, your job, and what you find most interesting about your job.

I HAVE ALWAYS HAD A TRUE DESIRE TO WORK IN PEDIATRICS.  I AM THANKFUL TO MY FIRST BOSS IN PEDIATRICS, NANCY CASAD, WHO HAS BEEN A TRUE INSPIRATION TO ME AS A PEDIATRIC DIETITIAN.  BECAUSE OF LOVE OF CHILDREN, I WORKED AT Le BONHEUR FOR MANY YEARS.  I HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO TRANSFER TO ST. JUDE AND LEARN ANOTHER ASPECT OF PEDIATRIC CARE THREE YEARS AGO.  I FEEL VERY FORTUNATE THAT OUR CITY HAS TWO PEDIATRIC HOSPITALS!  ANOTHER AVENUE I TOOK DURING MY PRACTICE WAS BECOMING A LACTATION CONSULTANT.  THIS TOO HAS LED TO MANY OPPORTUNITIES TO WORK IN THE COMMUNITY WITH PERINATAL PROFESSIONALS AND HAS ADDED A WHOLE DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVE TO MY PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE.   I USED MY DIETETIC CAREER AS A STEPPING STONE TO BECOMING AN LC.  I AM NOW VERY ACTIVE IN THE PROMOTION AND SUPPORT OF BREASTFEEDING IN OUR COMMUNITY.  I HELPED IN THE FORMATION OF THE MEMPHIS AREA LACTATION CONSULTANT ASSOCIATION AS WELL AS THE SHELBY COUNTY BREASTFEEDING COALITION.  IT WAS THROUGH THIS COMMUNITY WORK AND THROUGH A BOND WITH ANOTHER DIETITIAN, DR. MARIAN LEVY, WHICH INSPIRED ME TO RETURN TO GRADUATE SCHOOL.  I FINISHED MY MASTER’S OF PUBLIC HEALTH DEGREE IN AUGUST, 2011.

How did you get into this field?

MY GRANDMOTHER AND HER SISTER INFLUENCED ME WHEN I WAS IN HIGH SCHOOL.  THEY HAD WORKED IN THE “DIETARY” DEPARTMENT AT A HOSPITAL IN NEW ORLEANS WHERE THEY LIVED, AND TOLD ME I NEEDED TO BE A REGISTERED DIETITIAN.  I ALWAYS LIKED GOING TO WORK WITH THEM TO WATCH WHAT THEY DID, AND ALSO WAS ATTRACTED TO HEALTH CARE AS A CAREER.  I WENT TO THE UNIVERSITY OF TENNESSEE (KNOXVILLE) AT THE TIME THE COORDINATED UNEDERGRADUATE PROGRAM HAD JUST STARTED.  I WAS IN A LARGE CLASS OF INTERNS AND WE WERE THE FIRST GROUP TO EVER ENTER THE PROGRAM AS FRESHMAN.  I FINISHED IN 4 YEARS INCLUDING MY DIETETIC INTERNSHIP.  IT WAS A BUSY SENIOR YEAR BECAUSE WE HAD CLASSES AND THE INTERNSHIP ALTOGETHER!

Biography

I WAS BORN IN EL PASO, TEXAS, AFTER MY PARENTS HAD MOVED THERE FROM NEW ORLEANS FOR MY DAD’S JOB.  I MOVED TO MEMPHIS WHEN I WAS 6 YEARS OLD AND STARTED SCHOOL.  I ATTENDED A CATHOLIC GRADE SCHOOL AND HIGH SCHOOL AND THEN WENT ON TO UTK.  I HAD MET MY HUSBAND AT BISHOP BYRNE H.S. BUT WANTED TO GO AWAY TO COLLEGE.  AFTER DATING LONG DISTANCE AND THEN SPLITTING UP FOR 3 YEARS, WE STARTED DATING AGAIN AND EVENTUALLY MARRIED IN 1980.  WE HAVE A DAUGHTER AND 2 SONS.  I AM BLESSED TO STILL HAVE MY PARENTS WHO HAVE BEEN MARRIED FOR OVER 60 YEARS.  I HAVE A SISTER AND 2 BROTHERS, AND MANY NIECES AND NEPHEWS.  ALL OF OUR FAMILIES ARE HERE IN MEMPHIS!

Please list a few of your most recent accomplishments.

Aside from your professional career, what would you like MDDA members to know about you?

I AM ALSO VERY ACTIVE IN THE ALUMNI ASSOCIATION OF THE UNIVERSITY OF TENNESSEE.  I SERVE ON THE SHELBY COUNTY EXECUTIVE BOARD AND AM VERY PROUD TO BE A TENNESSEE VOLUNTEER.  I ALSO AM ACTIVE IN THE KAPPA DELTA ALUMNAE ASSOCIATION, MY COLLEGE SORORITY.  I CURRENTLY SERVE ON THE HOUSING COMMITTEE FOR THE KNOXVILLE CAMPUS.  I FEEL IT WAS THROUGH PARTICIPATION IN SORORITY LIFE THAT SHAPED ME INTO WHO I AM TODAY.  IT WAS A VERY SPECIAL EXPERIENCE FOR ME.

MY PRIDE AND JOY COMES FROM MY CHILDREN.  MY DAUGHTER IS AN LSU GRADUATE AND WORKS IN NEW ORLEANS IN THE FASHION INDUSTRY.  MY OLDEST SON IS IN AEROSPACE & OCEAN ENGINEERING AT VIRGINIA TECH, AND MY YOUNGEST SON IS MAJORING IN BIOLOGY AT THE UNIVERSITY OF TENNESSEE.

LAST BUT NOT LEAST, I HOLD MY CATHOLIC FAITH AS A TRUE GIFT, AND I AM ACTIVE IN PARISH LIFE AT ST. LOUIS CATHOLIC CHURCH HERE IN TOWN.
