Madison J. Jones
Madison J. Jones, Dietetic Intern
How long have you been a member of MAND?
Less than a year, I joined this fall before I started my internships at the VA.
Why did you join MAND?
I joined because I knew I would be in Memphis during my internship and wanted to be a part of a group which I knew would contribute to furthering my education. I also knew it would provide an opportunity for me to meet other students and professionals with similar goals and interests.
How has membership in MAND been of value to you and your practice?
I really enjoy the opportunity to meet other individuals in my field of practice, because it opens doors and starts friendships which is something that comes from being an MDDA member. MDDA has also been beneficial because it helps to keep me updated with the latest news and changes in our practice.
Tell us about yourself, your job, and what you find most interesting about your job.
I graduated from Mississippi State University in April 2011 and I am currently a dietetic intern at the Memphis VA hospital. The internship started in October and I have thoroughly enjoyed it. I have learned so much in such a short amount of time. All of the preceptors I have had so far have been so helpful; they are all so knowledgeable and eager to pass on what they have learned to me. As an intern I am starting to discover what the possibilities are as an RD and what I would enjoy as an RD. I think my favorite part has to be the opportunity to share nutrition knowledge with others in a way that can positively change their lives forever and hopefully lengthen their lifespan. It is such a wonderful opportunity to have that kind of impact on a person.
How did you get into this field?
I chose this field because I have always had a desire to learn more about food and its effect on the body and most importantly about improving overall health. When I realized this was something I was very interested in, it became obvious that nutrition was the field for me.
I was born in Memphis and have lived here for most of my life. I graduated from Germantown High School in 2007 and then went to Mississippi State University where I received a bachelor’s degree in Food Science, Nutrition and Health Promotion. In my 4 years at MSU I was able to be actively involved in Kappa Delta sorority, the Student Dietetic Association, and Campus Crusade for Christ. In April of 2011 I delightedly received my placement in the Memphis VA Dietetic Internship which started in October. I plan to graduate from the internship this July.
Please list a few of your most recent accomplishments.
I would consider my placement in the Memphis VA internship as an accomplishment. Also, obtaining my bachelor’s degree in April with a GPA of 3.85/4.00 was one of my greatest accomplishments.
Aside from your professional career, what would you like MDDA members to know about you?
I really enjoy traveling, cooking, and reading. I have a heart for the people of Haiti which stems from the awful earthquake which damaged the country in 2010 and from my 3 week trip in Haiti 6 months after the earthquake when I met many of the beautiful people that were affected by it. I also love children and am a volunteer at LeBonheur.
