How long have you been a member of MAND?
Why did you join MAND?
I joined as a Dietetic Intern because I thought the networking would be valuable. I have stayed a member because the networking IS valuable, and MDDA offers so many other benefits to members – not the least of which are the free CEU hours!
How has membership in MAND been of value to you and your practice?
The networking within MDDA is invaluable. In addition, the leadership skills learned by serving on the MDDA board have been of great benefit in my professional career.
Tell us about yourself, your job, and what you find most interesting about your job.
I completed my undergraduate degree from Harding University and then completed my Masters degree and Internship through the University of Memphis. I started working as the Nutrition Support/Critical Care RD at the VA Medical Center in December of 2006 and have held that position ever since. I function as a primary member of the Nutrition Support Team and cover the Medical, Surgical and Cardiac ICUs. In addition, I also cover a general med/surg floor. One of my favorite aspects of my job is serving as a preceptor for both U of M and VA Dietetic Interns.
Outside of work at the VA, I am also an adjunct faculty member at the University of Memphis where I have taught Medical Nutrition Therapy I and II for the past 4 . In addition to the MNT classes, I have also had the privilege to cover other classes in the graduate program for Clinical Nutrition where needed. Teaching and precepting is my passion, and I am thrilled to have the opportunity to do it so regularly.
Please list a few of your most recent accomplishments.
2012 – MDDA Outstanding Dietitian of the Year
2011 – TDA and MDDA Recognized Young Dietitian of the Year
2010 – MDDA Emerging Dietetic Leader
2011 – VAMC Dietetic Internship Preceptor of the Quarter
Aside from your professional career, what would you like MDDA members to know about you?
I have been happily married since 2005 and my husband and I recently bought a "fixer-upper" in Midtown that we like to call our "Beautiful Disaster." In my spare time I enjoy scheming about plans for the "new" house and developing my skills in the textile arts.
