Sara R. Foley

Sara R Foley, MS, RD, LDN

How long have you been a member of MAND?

Since 2006

Why did you join MAND?

I moved back to the Memphis area in the Fall of 2006 after completing 6 years of school in Starkville, MS. Although I wasn’t new to the area, I was disconnected to the dietetic profession due to completing my schooling/internship in another state and was looking for opportunities to meet more professionals and network.

How has membership in MAND been of value to you and your practice?

Being a member of MDDA has given me many valuable opportunities to grow in my profession. I have met so many people in my profession that I would not met otherwise and been able to network with.  I am in my third year of serving on the board (website manager 2009-2010; treasurer 2010-2012).

Tell us about yourself, your job, and what you find most interesting about your job.

After graduation in 2006 I started my career at the VA Medical Center in Memphis as the Spinal Cord Injury unit Dietitian. In early 2009, I took more interest in food service production and became the Food Systems Dietitian. The most interesting part about my job/career is there are so many opportunities in this field – you can be clinical and work in the inpatient setting, or be an outpatient dietitian providing education to patients to better their lifestyle, or work in food service. The choices are endless and available in whatever your passion is.

How did you get into this field?

I started college in accounting and after one semester, I knew accounting wasn’t for me. I have always had an interest in nutrition and health and one summer I worked alongside an RD who worked in school nutrition for Desoto County Schools. After talking with her and researching the field, I soon found myself changing my major and now have both a bachelors and masters in nutrition.

Biography

I was born and raised in Southaven, MS where I attended Southaven High School. I then went to Mississippi State University for 6 years, completing my bachelors, internship and masters degree, and met my husband. I then became employed by the VA Medical Center and currently I’m in my 5th year. I have a daughter going on 2 years old and a wonderful husband of over 4 years.
